All the cool peeps will recognize Cannon Beach’s iconic Haystack Rock from The Goonies.1 The protected rock—part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and an Oregon protected marine environment—is also known as an excellent location to view puffins in spring and summer.2
Brief History
- 1805
- William Clark, of the William and Clark Expedition, explores Cannon Beach.3
- 1846
- A cannon from the schooner Shark washes ashore near current-date Cannon Beach.
- 1848
- The Shark's cannon is rediscovered; the local community eventually renames itself after the cannon.
- May 6, 1935
- Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge is established.4
- 1985
- Haystack Rock appears in the film The Goonies.
